Vidya Vision

In partnership with Srinivasan Services Trust (SST), the CSR wing of the TVS Group, IETS has launched Vidya Vision, a project focusing on improving the quality of education in selected Government Schools in Tamil Nadu. The teaching-learning process was made both interesting and effective to realize the goal. The main objective of the initiative was to generate among children an interest in curricular and co-curricular activities, thereby improving their performance and inculcating an interest in studies.

Objectives of Vidya Vision:

  • To introduce technology in the classroom to improve academic performance.
  • To introduce reading clubs and improve reading levels.
  • To equip students with basic life skills.
  • Improve the academic performance of students in all subjects.
  • Work closely with students of Standards 10 & 12 with the aim of improving the pass percentage in board exams.
  • To counsel students of Standards 10 & 12 in deciding their career path.
  • Strengthen the basics of subjects like math, science and language skills of students of the primary level, laying foundations of higher education.
  • Contain absenteeism and drop out rates by motivating students.
  • Improve the report card system and make assessment meaningful.
  • Introduce self-assessment systems enabling students set realistic bench marks to attain higher achievement levels.
  • Motivate children to participate in intra & inter school competitions.
  • Involve parents in all-round development of their wards and also to help bind family ties.

In order to achieve its goal, a summer camp was conducted in 7 places in Tamil Nadu. To motivate students to attend school and develop skills, children of classes 1 to 8 were given interactive and informative sessions in drawing, painting, and crafts class using resources from the environment such as lentils, beads, glass, newspapers etc. Students of Classes 9 and 11 preparing for Board exams next year, were taught a minimum of 3 units from next year’s syllabus for each subject during the camp. Exhibitions were also conducted to display the children’s creativity for the school and parents.

The summer camp conducted in April and May 2008 was executed by the IETS resource team and supported by the Chennai team. On the basis of the quarterly performance the school teachers have now taken up the initiative to conduct such camps in their schools. Based on the feedback and review, IETS Chennai is continuing the project for the year of 2009-2010.
