SWASTHH PLUS

IETS has been associated with UNICEF since 2006 when the SWASTHH PLUS (School Water And Sanitation Towards Health and Hygiene Put Lessons to Use)
Programme was implemented in Karnataka. This project was introduced in Raichur, Gulbarga and Tumkur districts of Karnataka with the objective of making classroom learning in elementary schools interesting and effective through comprehensive teacher training programmes and by developing customized and need based teaching-learning Materials for a multi grade classroom.

The project also involved use of Activity Boards, IETS Publications and School Camps.

• Activity Boards
The Activity Boards use simple materials, but powerful learning methodologies as a solution for all schools to bridge the learning gap. IL&FS ETS has conducted a teacher-training programme for 861 teachers from the Government schools in Raichur, Karnataka on the use of the Activity Boards. The implementation of the program was also monitored.

• IETS Publications
IETS has developed 100 supplementary readers in Kannada for children of grades III-V along with a user manual for multi-grade teachers. These books written in the local language are based on Personal Safety, Personal Hygiene, Clean Environment, Pets and Household Animals, Wise Water Management, Greening the Environment, Child Labour, Care of Public Property, Life Skills, Food and Nutrition. The books were also adapted in Hindi for Jharkhand.

• School Camps
School Camps initiated by UNICEF were organised in 2758 Government schools in Raichur, Gulbarga and Tumkur districts of Karnataka.

The association with UNICEF has matured over the years and has enabled IETS to reach out to Government Schools in Chattisgarh and Jharkhand. The SWASTHH Plus programme was replicated in both these states. School camps were organized in the Government schools in all 18 districts of Chattisgarh and in Ranchi and Jamshedpur districts of Jharkhand. IETS also trained 130 teachers and over 3000 students of Classes 1-5 in Dantevada district of Chattisgarh to undergo a training programme with the objective of inculcating good health & hygiene practices in the school and the community.
