Early Reader’s Programme 2008-09

IETS Bangalore has been working with UNICEF-Chhattisgarh in the development of artwork and illustrations. The brilliant work done by IETS in the ‘Children for Change Series’ for Karnataka and the adaptation of the same for Jharkhand compelled UNICEF to use IETS service and capabilities in developing the language kit - The Early Reader’s programme for students of class-I and II in multi graded schools in Chhattisgarh.

The overall purpose of the Early Graded Readers is to prepare young children with the necessary language, cognitive, and early reading skills to enhance reading skills by preventing/eliminating reading difficulties.

Each reader is supplemented with a conversation card and calendar. The conversation cards contain densely packed illustrations with plenty of activities being depicted. The purpose of the conversation card is to introduce the words, which appear in the reader, as well as other common words that can be formed by combining the letters being introduced.

The Calendar is based on the reader and enables the teacher to take the students through the reader and summarize by flipping the pages. The kit also includes a workbook comprising worksheets. The extensive survey and photo coverage of the region enabled the IETS team to design the kit by incorporating elements such as geographical features, food habits, clothing, life style and culture in the material.
